Preview LÉtape du Tour 2022: the legendary cyclosportive

The 30th edition of the legendary cyclosportive L’Etape du Tour will be held in 2022 on the original route of the 12th Tour stage from Briancon via the mountain giants Galibier, Croix de Fer to Alpe d’Huez.

In the 30th edition of L’Etape du Tour on 10 July 2022, amateur cyclists will follow in the tyre marks of Bernard Hinault and Greg Lemond. The route from Briançon to Alpe d’Huez is identical to the Alpine stage of the 1986 Tour, when Bernard Hinault rode hand in hand with his team-mate Greg Lemond to the finish and won his last Tour de France stage. Lemond won the Tour that year, clearly ahead of Hinault.

The professional peloton will also ride the same stage in the 2022 Tour de France on stage 12 on 14 July.

The course of L’Etape du Tour 2022 leads on almost 170 kilometres from Briançon via mythical climbs such as Col du Galibier and Col du Croix de Fer, to the 21 hairpin turns up to Alpe d’Huez. Male and female amateur athletes will climb a total of 4,700 metres in altitude from start to finish – and ride around 72 categorised kilometres uphill.

Just like back in the Tour de France 2019, when Nairo Quintana won the mountain classification, Col du Galibier will be ridden from Le Monêtier-les-Bains. The road to the summit at 2,642 metres is 23 kilometres long, with an average gradient of 5.1 per cent. After a long descent down to the valley, to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, the road rises again.

The climb up to Col de la Croix de Fer is 29 kilometres long, with an average gradient of 5.1 percent. From the summit at 2,067 metres, the route leads 1,300 metres in altitude downhill to Allmond. The course then follows the Isere valley to Le Bourg-d’Oisans. From there, the famous 21 hairpin turns lead up to the winter sports resort of Alpe d’Huez – 13.8 kilometres with an average gradient of 8.1 percent.

Registration for the legendary amateur event, last held in 2019, opens on timeto at 4 p.m. on 18 October. Galibier, Croix de Fer & Alpe d’Huez: mountains and climbs of L’Etape du Tour 2022 in detail
